The Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (ACTLA) Congratulates the Honourable Ritu Khullar for her appointment as Chief Justice of Alberta

See below for our letter of congratulations to the Honourable Chief Justice Khullar:

Dear Chief Justice Khullar,

RE: Congratulations

On behalf of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, I congratulate you on your appointment as Alberta’s new Chief Justice.

Your experience as a jurist and expertise in constitutional and human rights law will serve the public and our province well as challenges to federal and provincial laws increase. So too will your collaborative approach and leadership style.

Our organization comprises members who have represented thousands of Albertans across the province. ACTLA promotes access to justice through different initiatives. At the outset of the pandemic, we led efforts to help our colleagues adapt to a new way of virtual practice and communicated on behalf of our members with the Court. We are on record with our provincial government as supporting an independent King’s Bench Court administration and legislative changes to the Legal Profession Act and Oaths of Office Act to make optional for articling students the swearing of the oath of allegiance to the Crown. We encourage an increase in legal aid funding to keep apace with inflation and at par with higher legal aid levels available in other provinces. We advocate for a Unified Family Court. We work with stakeholders regarding changes to the Rules of Court and remain steadfast against a no-fault personal auto insurance system. We provide continuing legal education and professional development and promote the administration of justice and the public good.

It would be our pleasure to serve the Court if we can be of any assistance.

Thank you for your dedication and public service.  We extend our best wishes to you.

Sincerely,

Angela Saccomani, KC

Chair
